Mysterious contents sealed in 160-year-old medicine bottles identified as a deadly laxative used by famed Japanese doctor to treat everything from strokes and syphilis


Antique glass vials from a medical kit belonging to Ogata Koan, a leading proponent for Western medicine in late feudal Japan, had jammed shut from age. Researchers at Osaka University bombarded a bottle with muons, which can pass through glass but generates different kinds of light depending on the substances they hit.
